Message from the Conference Chair

Please join us for the 25th annual Alaska Academy of Family Physicians Scientific Congress, June 17- 20, 2010 in Homer, Alaska. Located at the southern most tip of the Kenai Peninsula, Homer is variously known to Alaskans as the “Halibut Capital of the World” or the “Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea.” If you have never visited Homer before, you will find our little seaside community teaming with local artists, creative shops and excellent restaurants as well as a wide spectrum of outdoor activities. To go along with this, our Academy once again has lined up a wide variety of current medical topics and top notch speakers that should appeal to all primary care physicians.  If your time is limited, consider attending a portion of the conference. Single day and weekend registration rates are available. A total of 20.5 hours of CME credits are possible to earn over the course of the conference.

To travel to Homer from Anchorage by car, drive south about 5 hours on the Seward and Sterling Highways. Scheduled air service from Anchorage to Homer on Era/Frontier or Grant Aviation takes about 1 hour. The downtown Homer area is fairly compact but attractions on the Homer Spit are 4-5 miles away. The Homer High School is the site of the conference and will allow attendees arriving by RV to park in the school lots overnight. No hookups are available. Full service RV parks, beach campgrounds, cabins, lodges, hotels and B&B’s are located both around town and out on the Spit.

Our annual seafood dinner will be held Thursday evening at the Homer Elks Club on a bluff top location overlooking Kachemak Bay. Friday afternoon’s schedule is open for participants and families to enjoy local favorite attractions, like a halibut or salmon fishing charter, a bear viewing flight across Cook Inlet, or a hike on Bishops Beach or the Homestead Trail. Saturday evening’s President’s Dessert Reception will be held at the Islands and Oceans Visitors Center, with time to browse the natural history exhibits or stroll down a short trail to the beach. A 5K Fun Run/Walk is planned on the spit bike trail.

Take advantage of the location and explore the many possible pre and post conference recreational opportunities. These could include a water taxi ride to Kachemak Bay State Park for camping, kayaking, hiking or mountain biking or shorter day hikes and bike rides available in the Homer area. Also consider reserving a full day halibut or salmon fishing charter, an overnight stay at one of the remote Kachemak Bay lodges, or a lunch or dinner excursion on the ‘Danny J’ to Halibut Cove.  In addition, find time to visit our local brewery, winery, or meadery, our Saturday farmer’s market, and our fantastic interactive natural history museum.

I’ll look forward to seeing you in Homer in June.
